Organization of Symposia at the FALAN 2012 Congress

BrainFacts.org - new website explores the wonders of the brain and mind
IBRO joins the Canadian Institutes of Health Research; Dana Foundation; NINDS; NIMH; the Foundation for Biomedical Research; and the Wellcome Trust as an inaugural Content Partner in the newly launched www.BrainFacts.org. Initiated by the Society for Neuroscience, the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and the Kavli Foundation, the site will be a major step forward in presenting the brain and neuroscience in an accessible way to the public, organized to reflect the deep interconnections between topics in the field. We can imagine that there will be many ideas and possibilities imagined for the future, including ways to leverage this powerful technology and strategy platform to pursue new activities and partnerships that take advantage of Web-based communications.

IBRO creates MENA (Middle East/Northern Africa) Sub-Region
IBRO has formalized its support of neuroscience in the Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA) by creating a MENA sub-region, furthering its commitment to nurturing the development of neuroscience infrastructure and training in this underserved region. The launch of this new sub-region is the culmination of efforts by a group of MENA region-based neuroscientists of Arab descent – working both locally and abroad – and the leadership of IBRO to identify actions that could be taken to provide enhanced opportunities within the Arab-speaking world for young investigators pursuing a career in neuroscience research.

FENS-IBRO Partially Supported School: Evolution of Concepts on Pain

The school will present in detail the recent status and advances in functional neuroanatomy, electrophysiology, neuroimaging, molecular cell biology, pharmacology, genetics, psychology and sociology of pain, including an astonishing new role for the placebo-effect. The many different scientific facets are beginning to form a new integrative bio-psycho-social concept that will lead to novel therapeutic and preventive approaches to pain in health care.

FENS-IBRO Training Center: Imaging Neural Function

Lausanne/Geneva. The 3-week course in neuroscience will consist of lectures that will progress from the principles of imaging techniques to important recent advanced applications such as voltage-sensitive dye imaging, intrinsic optical signal imaging, in vivo 2-photon imaging, optogenetics and others. In the afternoon the students will work on a scientific project allowing them to gain hands-on experience with most of the aforementioned imaging techniques.

The Grete Lundbeck European Brain Research Foundation
  The Brain Prize 2012 is jointly awarded to Christine Petit and Karen Steel. Colin Blakemore, Chairman of the Selection Committee (and former Chair of the IBRO Nominating Committee) said: ‘Together, the work of these two European scientists illustrates the value and power of interdisciplinary approaches in neuroscience, and the way in which cutting-edge fundamental research is needed to understand complex clinical problems and to accelerate benefit for patients’.

Sten Grillner elected as IBRO’s next Secretary-General

The IBRO Governing Council has just elected its next Secretary-General: Sten Grillner, Professor and Director of the Nobel Institute for Neurophysiology, Department of Neuroscience, at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden. Professor Grillner will serve as IBRO’s Secretary-General Elect in 2012, and will begin his three-year term as IBRO Secretary-General in 2013.

The 2011 Scolnick Prize has been awarded to Bruce McEwen of The Rockefeller University for his contributions to understanding how hormones affect the brain. Bruce is a former Chair of the IBRO US/Canada Regional Committee.
